What's for Buka Puasa / Iftar?

Today is the 3rd day of Ramadhan. Yesterday for buka puasa or iftar, I made chicken curry, serawa durian and roti jala. My choice of drink was syrup bandung. Of course those are just for me. For Michael, I made him chicken parmigiana. We usually had dinner around 7pm and since maghrib here is around 7.16, it was not that difficult. Thank god summer here does not end at 9pm or something.

We didnt however eat until almost 8pm since as you all know, I am not a fast cook. And my eyes were hungrier than my stomach thus I made so much food. I havent even had the serawa durian that I planned to eat with roti jala. You see, that was why I made roti jala instead of rice so I can eat it with both chicken curry and roti jala. I am such a smart girl. Yes I am. If only I wasnt too full last night. Lol!

Fasting here is not as fun nor easy as back home. I can only imagine the hustling and bustling of pasar ramadhan. All the delicacies that they sell which most of them can only be found during fasting month. Which makes me wonder why is that the case? Like tepung pelita for example. I dont remember seeing them sold anywhere else except during fasting month. Or maybe its because I hardly ever go to the pasar malam (night market)? But yeah, I MISS eating tepung pelita. That would be my family's favourite. I basically have to have it every day. There was this stall at the pasar ramadhan near my parents place that sells one of the best tepung pelita. When I go there, without fail I would buy between 10-15 of them depending on how many people are going to be breaking fast at home. Sometimes when we have communication breakdown between me and my brothers, we would have more. None would go to waste of course!

So, there you go. I guess by now everyody knows how much Im dying for tepung pelita. Now, why dont you share with me what is your ultimate iftar or sahur food?

Kak Farina,
Tepung pelita? Who can resist that? Hahaha :))
Anyway, I am so not going to tell anyone my boring (read:dead boring) menu for iftar. That happens when you have your iftar in the hostel and you find it tiring to go Bazaar Ramadhan hehehe.
Anyway kak, Happy fasting :)

Belum pergi pasar ramadan lagi you dah lapar mata dah. Kalau pergi pasar ramadan lagilah pulak kot...

Anyway, I had tepung pelita and badak berendam for buka puasa yesterday. Which reminds me, have you ever translated the names of these kuihs to Michael? Wonder what he'd be thinking if we tell him we eat soaked rhinoceros!!

Hi Farina,
Alamaak.. ciaaannnya... but I think being a good cook yourself, must be very easy for you to make it, right?

Rajinnyaa.. serawa durian? Dah terliur nih...

Anyway, we had tepung pelita yesterday, since my 9yo has been pestering me to buy them since day1 puasa. Went to Pasar Ramadhan... but there were sooo many people lah. Susah nak membeli. This Murtabak Langkawi (which is very famous everytime the Pasar Ramadhan is here) had a long queue - nearly 20 people infront of us! Dah teringin sangat, terpaksalah waited in the line like 20 minutes... sigh....

Akmal, Happy fasting to you too. Eh kat hostel tak best ke food? My time, there was this 1 cafe tht always have good food. every week or mth we have to change cafe and get the ticket. 1st come 1st serve basis. If i didn get the ticket for tht cafe, id try to exchange or still eat there. heheh.

Hi Kak Farina,

Er, I got no favourite iftar food (like Duh!), but can I add the food I'm missing most here in the 'Eh, Ooot and Aboot' land?

I'm adding it whether you say can or not lar...

Nasi Goreng Paprik, and Nasi Kandar! And Wantan Mee...And Popiah...

Ok, I better stop...I'll be too hungry then...=)

Hi Kak Farina,

in my hometown, tepung pelita is sold at the market daily. So on every trip of balik kampung, we will stop by our favorite market and I always have tepung pelita (apart from laksa).

Talking about eating too much, I actually threw up last night after iftar (should have resisted the temptation to tambah nasi, but I haven't had Malaysian food since day 1 of Ramadhan =( ). Was scared for a while though because I thought I've turned bulimic!

Hi Farina
I miss basically everything that i used to hv back home for iftar. From the porridge from the nearby mosque to air khathirah to everything else home cooked or bought from the bazaar ramadhan. I do not know why but the cravings get especially bad during Ramadhan. Since i dont hv a sweet tooth, i always like to bite into a crispy warm fried banana (goreng pisang after i hv had my first class of water) Thus i truly miss the goreng pisang from home, nothing beats that, the ones i make myself or find here, semua lain rasanye. But anyways, tahun depan we shall balik kampong for raya, so i am really looking forward to that!

To be honest, i hv no idea what is tepung pelita, i shall go google the picture now! = ) Perhaps i hv eaten it a zilliong times and not know the name heheheh.

Daphne, i know everything is your fav. lol. Do they have any Msian dish at the canteen/hall?

Becky, alahai sampai keluar balik. Must be for eating too much too fast. ;) I realise tht i cant eat too much after fasting thts why i hate going for buka puasa buffet back home. Dont worry, once doesnt make u a bullimic. ;)

Niko, oohh ayam masak halia kisahnya.

Mush, samalah kita. nanti dah dekat raya lagilah tension giler. Kitorang pun insyaallah balik next raya too. ;) eh have u found out abt tepung pelita yet? thts like the ultimate kuih for buka puasa.

Alahai shiannya dia. Why not you make it yourself? Tak payahlah guna daun pandan. Modify la sket. Walaupun tak dapat 100% asli, dapat sipi-sipi pun jadilah, buat lepas gian... hehehe... itulah yang selalu mama buat dulu..

Hello,
Just stumbled onto your blog. Nice. Always interested in chacking out food-themed blogs.
For buka, I prepared bulgogi for the family. Not bad at all. smiles all around.
My daily sahur is simple. A glass of Milo and my anti-reflux pills. Sad huh?
