Navy Open Day

Last Saturday Dec 01 was the Navy Open Day where civilians are allowed on board the ship. This time it was the USS Rushmore. It was huge though according to Michael who works on them all the time, its the smaller one.

We were supposed to start early as family members were allowed in earlier between 0900-0945. Unfortunately yours truly was late. You see, it was 'hair-day' for me so by the time I was all dolled-up, it was already 9am. We then went to pick Julita up and by the time we got to the parking arae, the queue was already very long. It was also very windy and so COLD! How long do we have to wait before we got to go onboard? Almost 2hrs. tsk tsk tsk. Even then there was 'traffic' inside the ship as tours were conducted in a group of 10 or something like that.

A few facts about the inside of the ship. Besides the regular things like laundry room, dining hall, 'hospital', they also have a post office! Can you believe that? We all thought that was pretty funny. They also have atm machine onboard. Pretty cool I must say.

The have a separate birthing for the men and the women and the women's birthing area has a curfew time whereby the men are not allowed in and none for the men. We were showed the birthing area for the marine (if im not mistaken) and my goodness, they were small. Michael tried to lie on the 'bed' and it barely even fit him.

We didnt finish the tour as all 3 of us were tired, hungry, cold and a bit dizzy. Yup, you can feel the ship swaying a little bit and it was not fun. So we decided to cut short the tour and left.

I have to ask David to read your write-up. Farina. He lived on board the USS Barney for 2 years, enjoyed it and has a lot of stories to tell. I have only visited a ship once, during a school excursion to Port Klang. Can't recall any details except the clean-cut good looks of the officer who took us on the tour, Capt Kamal. Blush.

Hi Kak Farina,

Ah...

I like those American Navy men in uniforms...*Blush*

Like Tom Cruise, in uniform in ...Damn some of his behaviour (dumping sweet wife comes to mind), but damn, he was hot...

Hi Farina

I finally managed to get in. I don't know what changed. :)

Anyway, this post reminds me of the times when I used to attend cocktail parties aboard international navy ships that called at Port Klang. The most impressive was of course, the USS Independence (aircraft carrier). Food was good, drinks aplenty and good band for music all night long. The gorgeous and smart Marines putting on a silent drill show sealed the deal for a wonderful evening. ;)

One thing in common, most navy ships have very tiny personal spaces. Well, it is not a vacation, right? hahaha They are there to work.

Lily, actually Michael wanted us to leave on our own but luckily i insisted tht we got 1 of them to show us the way out. tak kuasa nak sesat dlm kapal navy wei!

Kak Ram, katil tu tripple decker tau not the usual double decker. but only for the marines. dont ask me why. i kno if michael kena tidur like tht, every 5min dia akan jatuh ke lantai!

Thanks Norma. Low humidity tht day so nice hair but very windy so berterbangan rambut i. lol!

Rita, memang rushmore is a smaller one. I didn realise david was in the navy before?

Pi, mau nya tak. kejap2 cakap, "we'r gonna be late". tension betul. lol!

Daphne, me dont like tom cruise anymore. :P

JT, ur back! lol!. memang birthing for marines are small. memanglah theyr working but how lah to sleep like tht for 7-8 mths? kesian diorang.

Farina.. I got confused. Apa tuh 'birthing area'? Do you mean 'bathing'? He-he. At least they got both sexes on board. A floating city with ATMs and all that. Me only hole holed-up with guys... :(

Hi Farina! So glad to see new posts on here :-P ... That was a nice tour, I would've given it a complete once-over and then probably come again cos navy ships are so interesting! ATM machine on the ship? Now that's cool, imagina the wads and wads of $$$ kept in there, cos the ship's gone for months and I wonder if they stop to replenish?... Uiiiii I'm curious, curious...

Beribiru, if only we had gone earlier and not having to wait for almost 2hrs, we wouldv had a much better tour. :(
replenish apa? money or food? :P

Farina, that is a big boat. The HMS Belfast that I took my son on looked much smaller in comparison. At least on this Navy ship they had real beds. I rasa some only have hammocks. Lagi sedih. I hencefoth re-name the USS Rushmore as the "lurve boat".......
