Iran and Plastic Surgery

Yesterday on Oprah the topic was 'Beauty' or what people around the globe do in the name of beauty. Some things are pretty well-known facts like in Brazil, where it is normal for a girl to spend half of their salary on beauty products or regime each month. Or that it is hard to find big sizes in Paris or how bengkung or body wrap is used by women who just gave birth to make the tummy go flat faster. Yeap, we have heard of those don't we?

But when we talk about Iran or specifically the Iranian women and their beauty regime, would you have thought that it would involve plastic surgery? Yes my friends. You heard me right. Plastic surgery. Nose job! It is apparently very normal for them and they don't even hide the fact that they just had a nose job. Wearing a band-aid on their nose is something that is done with pride. They wear hijab and band-aid on their nose and nobody gives a hoot. Some of them would actually wear the band-aid for 2 freaking years just to show people that she just had a nose job while others even if they have not had a nose job would still put the band-aid to make people think that they did. That is how proud they are when they had it done. What do you think the alim ulama in Malaysia would say about this fact?

Watching the show really makes me wonder about nose jobs or any other type of plastic surgeries like breasts augmentation, tummy tuck and so on. But 1 thing for sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some like it skinny, others like it big. Some like it straight, others like it curl. And it will forever be that we are never satisfied with what we have. We always think that the grass is greener on the other side. Or is it? What do you think?

That's very interesting--who would've ever guessed that anyone would want to advertise having had plastic surgery?

For the most part plastic surgery is just plain stupid. Most everything that women (and some men) complain about they way they look, someone out there actually prefers. Better to find someone that is pleased with your appearance than to waste money and have children that are unattractive in your own eyes...

grass isn't always greener on the other side, as i've come to learn, unfortunately.. but that's a long story (not related to surgery though, ;) ..)

anyway, i also just wanted to reply to the comment you left on my blog:
"hey farina!
yeah, i WAS a sahm until about 2 weeks ago :( kena balik kerja cuz extra money was (is) needed. hmph."

hope you've been well!

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence... until we get to the other side of the fence lah. :)

If I had to wear a band-aid on my nose (for whatever reasons), I ambik MC tak nak keluar rumah...

Komen Pak Malim kucing ray yg alim.

Hari tu saya pi sebuah horsepital swasta sebab sakit lutut, kata Pak Malim sambil terkentut. Sori! kata Pak Malim sambil naik lori. Sambil duduk2, saya nampak banner horsepital tu, pembedahan perut utk mereka yg mengalami obesiti, RM 48,500. Wah. Hebat, kata Pak Malim dgn bulu mata yg lebat.

Asianmommy, aint that like really something? ;)

David, I thought abt their children too. Im sure that would make the kids feel pressured that they are not as 'good looking' as their parents.

Nic, i sure would wanna hear your story. So you're working now ya. Congrats! ;)

Ummi, thank you for the wish. :)

Pak Malim sampai terkentut2, kata Farina yg agak bantut. memang plastic surgery mahal, kata farina sambil memegang rehal. tapi masih ramai sanggup berhutang kerananya kata farina sambil ternganga.

Zeelicious, memang who would have thought kan? I tell you, i pun terkejut beruk jugak when i watched the show.

Sarcy, yelah. Thts why lah i wonder wht would they say to this. hehe.

What's God-given is still far better than any surgeon's job, IMHO. At least they don't end up looking like freaks. I mean, just one look at Michael Jackson or Jocelyn Wilderstein should be enough to put anyone off plastic surgery for good.

Farina, i absolutely LOVE Oprah, but here in Belgium, they dont show her shows in the normal order, sometimes they repeat old ones and throw in some very news ones, i hv missed alot of precious episodes = ( Anyways, thanks for sharing this information, how interesting. In regards to beauty, i think it is truly on the eye of the beholder. But when it comes to religion, i know for a fact that islam is practise differently in other parts of the world. Thus, i am not surpised that it IS NOT frowned upon in Iran. Good one Farina, and thx again for sharing! Very thought provoking!

Minah,
I always wanted a plastic surgery, ever since I was a kid. I wanted a matsalleh's nose, a bigger pair of eyes, and fuller hair.

Now, I seriously need a tummy tuck. Haha!

I saw the same episode that day. This shows so many people are unhappy with their look. As for the Iranian woman I would kill for their hidung mancung. Ini pulak dia orang nak plastic surgery !!

babe! women are like that la.... never happy with their own looks & bods.... tapi kan iranian ladies hidung mancung2...why la went for surgeries lagi...

such an eye opener post... now i won't be 'tipah tertipu' and ternganga looking at their 'nose'....

I think people resort to plastic surgery because they want to look good based on standards set by society.

These days people tend to judge another based on what's on the surface; nobody looks at what matters the most - the heart of a person.

Pugly, yelah. too many surgeries tht u dont even recognised yourself. Sad.

Mush, itulahnya. Im used to seeing ppl praying w/o telekung but plastic surgery in Iran .. hmmmm. lol.

Radz, itulah i cakap. I really wonder what is the ulama's take on this one.

Cath, I pun mengidam tummy tuck. hahaha.

Gert, now we know that those hidung mancung are not real!

Anis, memang case tipah tertipu kita. We all thought that hidung diorang mancung but according to them their noses are in general big.

Julie, as much as I dont like being big, i dont wanna be like a skeleton either. No shape mana sexy kan?

Farina,

Yup..it's no secret in Iran. Hubby had stayed in Tehran for 10 months and that scenario is just normal. Ini bukan untuk cantikkan hidung, untuk 'straight'kan hidung yang bengkok sejak lahir. And, it's not just the ladies, but also for the guys.

i am an Iranian woman, this is somehow true, but people here never use too much band-aid or use it for fashion??!!i don't know who spread these idea.you should know there is a problem we have to wear hijab so we can't go to any public place with dress and without hijab so people here pay attention to their face because nobody can see their body or their hair,of course we cover half of our head with scarf for make it better, but don't be very surprised for plastic surgery because we don't have enough facility to show our beauty.
